Staying on the Save Side

Oh yes, we all know the story and their explanations: Peter, the boat, the stepping out and the staying in… But going through the process, the process of stepping out and also the process of staying in, staying “save”, that’s an other story.
We (my wife and I) are in the middle of such a situation. Not self, but in the support of others. We watch those who stepped out, we hear those who stayed save in and it is a saddening thing to look at it. It bring you back to the moments you stepped out and you still hear the voices, the sounds of concern and in a way I know those concerns were honest, not meant to be judgemental. We take responsibility for “scaring” the people by our decisions and their results.
Would we do it different? I don’t think so, but still we understand. It were those moments where covenant, trust and friendships were tested. It were those decisions that proved relationships in their value. It were also the moments where people were not able to continue standing with you because the bond was build on “agreement” in the “as usual” and the “don’t push the traditions”! Mainly life was build on an invisible agreement how we are supposed to life and as long as you keep yourself to that agreement, all is well.
By now, overcoming the rejections and judgments, I have learned to value our decisions and to even honor them as they made a way for “the new”. We paid a price, but it was worth it.
Another significant thing for those who stayed in, was their prove of our wrong and irresponsible steps, when things “went wrong”! People who live from the “right and wrong” perspective will always find their right in staying on the safe side. It is obvious that pushing the limits of the status quo will bring the risk of failure. Leaving the save boat for the shore is something totally different than stepping on the water.
Well, I have to say that we are not made to walk on water. Our feet are not really formed for that, so don’t make the mistake to think that walking on water is a normal thing. The issue has never been walking on water. It was the agreement with his Lord that made him step out and THAT’S THE PART THE OTHERS MISSED!

Many of the steps we have to make are there not for the prove of right decisions, but for the challenging of our perspective on what is safe! To challenge the things that keeps God from bringing bigger understanding on the things, experiences, moments we miss by defining SAFE AND TRUE!
Today, Gods judgement is sweeping the church worldwide in an intense way, questioning our values, our believes and with it pushing us into an unknow, “unsafe” realm where we need to live from our total trust on Him. He is challenging our idols, our boats, our structures that “worked” for us but kept the multitudes out. It is a time of testing the foundations, the Rock we build on and… the outcome will be scary but great. When God is shaking our Safeside, what will be our reaction. My favorite chapter in that is Isaiah 22, where the king was not aware of the fact that it was God, attacking the strongholds in His judgement. Not to kill, but to safe!

He removed the protection of Judah. You looked in that day to the armor of the House of the Forest; You also saw the damage to the city of David, That it was great; And you gathered together the waters of the lower pool. You numbered the houses of Jerusalem, And the houses you broke down To fortify the wall. You also made a reservoir between the two walls For the water of the old pool. But you did not look to its Maker, Nor did you have respect for Him who fashioned it long ago. (Isaiah 22:8-11 NKJV)

When the Lord removes the protection of our fortified cities, what will be our reaction? Breaking down the “houses” for the sake of our safety or recognize Him in it and allow Him to be our only safety and protection?!

Jesus, by giving Peter the permission to come, challenged the definition of safety and revealed the hearts of him who stepped out and those who stayed in.
The process God is allowing in (y)our lives is a deep but beautiful one.
Building new faith, new trust, new safety will be the glorious result and with that truth, that value, I will travel back to a nation in need of this truth!
